Rodger is the author of Uintah Railroad Pictorial Vol. 2 CONC I. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Michael, 2 CONT Looks like I do find a D.D. No other listings 2 CONC for Robertson, but there might be more in the Loma, Fruita directories - 2 CONC where ever they are. 2 CONT Well, I took a minute to look the name up in the Route 1 book, and it 2 CONC looks as if I answered my owne question, the following is a direct word 2 CONC for word from that volume: 2 CONT "ROBERTSON, The following comes from a history outline filled out by 2 CONC Donald Robertson and forwarded to us by Cecilia Anne Keifer Schmalz. An 2 CONC item from the Daily Sentinel is also included. (Michael, the Daily 2 CONC Sentinel is the Grand Junction paper) Dewey "D.D." and Lovelia 2 CONC Robertson were employed at Dragon, Utah by the Uintah Railway - they 2 CONC tranferred to Mack in 1933 so the children could attend Fruita Union High 2 CONC School. According to Deyon Davidson Boughton, they lived on Red Mesa, 2 CONC north of Mack, for a time, but also spent some time at Mack. Their 2 CONC children were: Donald, Gordon, Ernest, Galen, A story in the Daily 2 CONC Sentinel 5 August 1945 told of D.D. Robertson being injured in an 2 CONC accident on Red Mesa. He was driving on the highway two miles north of 2 CONC Mack in his Ford coach when he ran into a tractor being backed out of a 2 CONC driveway by Milton Cox, age 16. It was reported that Robertson's injuries 2 CONC were quite painful, but not serious. his car suffered $100 worth of 2 CONC damage; the tractor was overturned and thrown in to an irrigation ditch 2 CONC but not badly damaged. Captain James Cole, the highway patrolman who 2 CONC investigated the accident, found that the driveway from the Cox home was 2 CONC bordered with shrubbery, obstructing the view of the road. Three of the 2 CONC Robertson boys were in the Navy in WWII. Donald was at Pearl Harbor a the 2 CONC time of the Japenese attack on the battleship Virginia. There was time of 2 CONC anxiety in the Robertson family until they received word that he was 2 CONC safe. In fall of 2 CONC 1937 I joined the CCC's. I went to work driving the Unitah Stage Line 2 CONC from Grand Junction to Mack, for about a year...quit to take a job 2 CONC driving Walter Gerlitz's truck "Lady Luck", an eighteen wheeler, hauling 2 CONC peaches, beans and bailed hay. 2 CONT 2 CONT In November 1939, I enlisted in the United States Navy for a six year 2 CONC cruise. I was assigned to the Battleship West Virginia, B48, newest one 2 CONC in the fleet at that time, and one of only two with sixteen inch guns. I 2 CONC stayed on her until December when we were sunk in Pearl Harbor. 2 CONT 2 CONT A week later, when the old Lexington, CV16, came to Pearl, I volunteered 2 CONC for sea duty and put out to sea on one of four air craft carriers we had 2 CONC in the fleet...had a very busy time for about five months dodging 2 CONC Japanese planes and submarines. 2 CONT 2 CONT Our first battle aboard the Lexington was at Bougainvile, where Pappy 2 CONC Boyington shot down five planes, becoming the first American ace in the 2 CONC South Pacific. Our next encounter was at Salamumu and Lae where we 2 CONC knocked out their docks and troop ships, etc., on both islands. 2 CONT 2 CONT Our next battle was the Battle of Coral Sea, where we sunk most of their 2 CONC fleet present and they sank our carrier, the Lexington. After a few 2 CONC hours I was picked out of the drink by the crew of the heavy cruiser, 2 CONC Minneapolis, and taken to a South Sea island by the name of Tonga Tabu. 2 CONC There we were put aboard a WWI transport and cattle boat. It only took 2 CONC three weeks to get back to San Diego...top speed ten knots. At San Diego 2 CONC we got new clothes and finally our pay after seven months. We made 2 CONC liberty in our new dungarees! 2 CONT 2 CONT From Diego I was sent to Bremerton, WA, to a navy yard for new 2 CONC construction...was assigned to the Nassau, a baby flat top carrier, 2 CONC CVI16, my third ship and the one I loved the best. When a battle was 2 CONC going on we were there and if no major battle was going on, we were kept 2 CONC busy ferrying planes and squadrons of pilots to the next battle front 2 CONC coming up. When we had been in commission one year to the day, we pulled 2 CONC into Kundiawa and the old man got on to the loud speaker and announced we 2 CONC had just traveled one million miles in one year. Our home port was Pearl 2 CONC Harbor, some of the places we visited were Christmas Island, Guam, 2 CONC American Samoa, Pango Pango, Fiji Island, Maui, Tarawa, Naumea, New 2 CONC Caledonia, New Guinea, Espiritu Santo, Brisbane, Australia, Cold Bay and 2 CONC Attu. In the Bearing Sea the temperature was sixty degrees below zero, a 2 CONC month earlier we had been dying from the heat down by the equator. We 2 CONC spent six weeks up in the Bearing Sea until Attu was captured and we lost 2 CONC all of our planes (twenty-one),and most of our squadron of Marine pilots. 2 CONT 2 CONT After Attu we headed right back to San Diego, where we got more planes 2 CONC and a new squadron of Marine pilots. Then back to the South Pacific and 2 CONC the battle of Tarawa. The rest of my time was spent mostly in the South 2 CONC Pacific either in combat or ferrying planes to the next theatre of 2 CONC operation. My discharge papers showed I was in fifteen battles, lost two 2 CONC ships, received two "Dear John" letters, (which I deserved), and I have 2 CONC been married twice, total of forty-seven years. I have one daughter, 2 CONC Donna, her mother was a native of Aspen, CO. We were married 2 CONC thirty-seven years until she passed away in 1980. I've been married to my 2 CONC present wife for ten years this month, September 16, 1992. I have lived 2 CONC in northern California since I left the Navy in November of 1945. 2 CONT 2 CONT I worked for Western Electric as an installer for five years, worked six 2 CONC months as a radio operator and technician for the Army at the Presidio, 2 CONC in San Francisco, CA. I worked three months for PG&E out in the field, 2 CONC went to Heald's College in San Francisco, night classes studying 2 CONC electronics and television repair. I also worked in a television and 2 CONC radio repair shop part time for one year. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1950 I went to work for the San Francisco Examiner, Monarch of the 2 CONC Dailys, delivering papers all over northern California. I held jobs from 2 CONC dock lumper to city route delivery newspaper man, later district manager 2 CONC and finally as a street manager in charge of newspaper racks on corners 2 CONC and in charge of store sales and collection. 2 CONT 2 CONT I worked for thirty years for the San Francisco Examiner until I had my 2 CONC fourth big heart attack...insurance company put me out to pasture, July 2 CONC 28, 1978. Since then my wife, Cora, my daughter, Donna and I have 2 CONC traveled extensively from Jaspar, Canada to Mexico, from Victoria, Canada 2 CONC to Mobile, Alabama, from San Francisco to New Orleans, from Seattle, WA 2 CONC to New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC and most cities in 2 CONC between. 2 CONT 2 CONT Looking forward to seeing all you classmates next month, September 18, 2 CONC 1992. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 21 JUL 2002 3 TIME 17:10:53 0 @I20@ INDI 1 NAME David /Robertson/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE Est 1923 1 DEAT 2 DATE Est 1923 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 25 JUL 2002 3 TIME 10:44:49 0 @I21@ INDI 1 NAME Everet Ernest /Robertson/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 30 MAY 1924 2 PLAC Mojave,CA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 13 MAY 1993 2 PLAC San Francisco,CA 1 FAMS @F19@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 3 JUL 2003 3 TIME 16:03:56 0 @I22@ INDI 1 NAME Margaret /Robertson/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE MAY 1926 2 PLAC OK 1 DEAT 2 DATE Est 1929 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 25 JUL 2002 3 TIME 10:44:23 0 @I23@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F20@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I24@ INDI 1 NAME Alberta /Snyder/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 MAR 1910 2 PLAC Aspen,CO 1 DEAT 2 DATE 27 APR 1980 2 PLAC San Rafael,CA 1 FAMS @F17@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 21 JAN 2002 3 TIME 17:51:39 0 @I25@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F18@ 0 @I26@ INDI 1 NAME Josephine Katherine /Mahoney/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 14 JUN 1923 2 PLAC San Francisco,CA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 11 AUG 2000 2 PLAC San Francisco,CA 1 FAMS @F19@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 14 MAY 2002 3 TIME 11:25:37 0 @I27@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F22@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I28@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F132@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I29@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I30@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F23@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I31@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F811@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I32@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F24@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I33@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F25@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 0 @I36@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F6@ 0 @I45@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F3@ 0 @I46@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F9@ 0 @I47@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F35@ 1 FAMC @F9@ 0 @I48@ INDI 1 NAME Jason Hyde /deMontigny/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 JUN 1972 2 PLAC Clearlake Highlands,CA 1 CHR 2 DATE 7 AUG 1972 2 PLAC Middletown,CA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 15 SEP 1972 2 PLAC Victorville,CA 1 BURI 2 DATE SEP 1972 2 PLAC Victorville,CA 1 FAMC @F9@ 1 NOTE BURIAL: Reinterred in Santa Rosa Mem. The regiment 2 CONC was mustered out on June 26, 1865, with an aggregate of 585 men. 2 CONT ------------ 2 CONT Source: The Union Army, vol. 2 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Battles Fought 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Fought on 15 June 1862 at Winchester, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 28 December 1862 at Moorefield, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 25 April 1863 at Newtown, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 06 May 1863 at Brandy Station, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 06 May 1863 at Woodstock, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 14 June 1863 at Winchester Heights, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 14 June 1863 at Winchester, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 15 June 1863 at Winchester, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 17 June 1863 at Winchester, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 29 July 1863. 2 CONT Fought on 08 November 1863 at Brandy Station, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 27 November 1863 at Mine Run, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 01 December 1863 at Rapidan River, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 05 May 1864 at Wilderness, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 06 May 1864 at Wilderness, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 07 May 1864 at Wilderness, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 16 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 19 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 22 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 31 May 1864 at Totopotomoy Creek, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 01 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 02 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 03 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 12 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 13 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 09 July 1864 at Monocacy, MD. 2 CONT Fought on 18 July 1864 at Snicker's Ferry, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 20 July 1864. 2 CONT Fought on 21 July 1864. 2 CONT Fought on 21 August 1864 at Charlestown, WV. 2 CONT Fought on 19 September 1864 at Opequan, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 22 September 1864 at Fisher's Hill, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 04 October 1864 at Winchester, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 19 October 1864 at Cedar Creek, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 25 March 1865 at Petersburg, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 02 April 1865 at Petersburg, VA. 2 CONT Fought on 06 April 1865 at Sailor's Creek, 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Family Crossroads - Personal Notes: 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: William David Robertson faced Sanford Harold Cox across the 2 CONC battle line at the Battle of the Wilderness (5-7 May 1864). William was 2 CONC assigned to the Army of the Potomac, (6th Army Corps, 3rd Division, 2nd 2 CONC Brigade, 122d Ohio) in General U.S. Grant's first major command, that was 2 CONC to advance down the Orange Turnpike toward central Virginia. Sanford was 2 CONC assigned to the Confederate Army under General R. L. Lee (Army of 2 CONC Northern Virginia, Second Army Corps, Rhodes' Division, Doles' Brigade, 2 CONC 4th Georgia), that defended Richmond from any advance of the Union Army. 2 CONC The result of military action in the Wilderness of Virginia was pretty 2 CONC much a draw. It wasn't until three days later that the Union Army began 2 CONC to make gains as the action swung westward toward Spottsylvania and 2 CONC Spottsylvania Courthouse (7-20 May 1864). In a Union reconnoiter at Mule 2 CONC Shoe, a chance encounter became a full battle. Sanford Harold Cox was 2 CONC taken prisoner and transported to Delaware as a prisoner of war for the 2 CONC duration. William David Robertson went on to participate in the last 2 CONC battles in Virginia, ending with Lee's surrender at Appomattox and the 2 CONC parade of the victorious Grand Army of the Republic in Washington, D.C. 2 CONC Thus, the offspring of those two scions descended through Dewey Robertson 2 CONC and Lovelia Cox and were melded together merely 55 years after the 2 CONC cessation of hostilities. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 30 JUN 2003 3 TIME 01:29:12 0 @I98@ INDI 1 NAME Louisiana /Murphy/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE MAR 1833 1 FAMS @F15@ 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Pension Benefits 2 DATE 14 SEP 1901 2 PLAC
